Winged sea lavender (Limonium sinuatum) is widespread throughout the Mediterranean region near the coast. It thrives in full sun on dry, well-drained soils such as gravel, sand, or loam. The species prefers to grow on poor, dry grasslands and on sea coasts. Due to its low frost hardiness (down to approx. –10 °C), it is usually cultivated as an annual in Central Europe, but can be overwintered in frost-free, bright locations at 10–15 °C. Low humidity and good air circulation are important to prevent fungal diseases. The plant reaches a height of 20–40 cm, is short-lived, and reproduces easily by self-seeding. It owes its name to its characteristic winged stems. Depending on the sowing time, the flowers appear from June or July to September and offer a variety of colors, with hybrid seeds usually available in stores.
Non hybrid
Frostproof
Sow in a cold frame or in trays from March, 2-3 seeds each in small pots, pay attention to the sowing depth on the seed bag - differences between species and varieties, and keep moist. Do not cultivate too warm. Germination after approx. 2 weeks. In dry weather, cut flowers shortly before they wither and dry in an airy, dark place. Propagate by sowing, root cuttings and division. Limonium sinuatum is partially hardy.
