Description

The old variety Früheste der Mark or Speyerer Maikirsche is a heart cherry. It produces medium-sized, dark red cherries and ripens very early. It therefore also flowers early and is sensitive to frost. Pleasantly sweet, delicately tart taste. Not self-fertile, requires another pollinator plant. (Suitable are e.g: Büttners Rote Knorpelkirsche, Große Prinzessin, Große Schwarze Knorpelkirsche and the Braunauer Kirsche). The tree is medium-growing, bee-friendly flowering. Due to early ripening, the fruits escape the cherry fruit fly.

Non hybrid

Frostproof

Growing tips

Requires a sunny, warm and sheltered but airy location with deep, loamy and calcareous soil. The tree is hardy down to -20°C, but the flowers in spring (April) are sensitive to frost. Feed with compost in spring and prune annually after the harvest. If necessary, paint the bark white in the fall to protect against frost.
