Description

Male chaff is also known as blue lobelia and belongs to the genus Lobelia, which is a member of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae). It is creeping-bushy growing, annual or perennial and the flowers are white, blue, purple, pink or red. Insect friendly. Insect friendly.

Growing tips

Always keep moist, but ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging. After the 1st main flowering at the end of July, cut back 1/3 so that flowering continues into September. Overwintering in a greenhouse or indoors at 10-15°C is unusual. It is easy to sow the seeds again the following year. Also good as ground cover and in hanging baskets. Geraniums and blue daisies are also good plants. Work with gloves, as the alkaloids in the plant veins are poisonous to humans and animals. Sensitive to frost and therefore only germinates from 15°C in 1-2 weeks.
