Growing tips

Cultivation: Sow in Ø 10 cm pots, 2 seeds per pot. Harden off before planting out. Leave only the strongest plant. Or directly outdoors from mid-May. Soil temperature for germination at least 18°C. Plant at least 80 x 100 cm apart. Likes warm, sheltered locations. Sensitive to frost. Several plants can pollinate each other. Harvest regularly (from 17 cm) so that new fruits are continuously formed. Fertilize and water regularly. Observe crop rotation. Home-grown zucchini seeds are strongly discouraged because they can produce the toxic bitter substance cucurbitacin. Mixed cultivation with borage promotes pollination. Pumpkins and zucchinis of the same species can cross-pollinate, making zucchinis bitter and inedible or poisonous (due to so-called curcurbitacins).
