Fig trees or the true fig (Ficus carica) are becoming increasingly popular in Germany, too, as climate change ensures that they also provide a good harvest in our country. They can be planted in the garden in a sunny or sheltered place or even in a pot. In winter, however, they must be well protected from frost, because especially young trees are still sensitive to frost. Especially in mild regions fig trees can be grown very well. In colder regions, planting in a container is preferable, as you can better protect the figs from frost and cold periods. You should also pay attention to whether the species are self-fruiting or not. Non-self-pollinating species must be fertilized by the fig wasp, otherwise they will not produce fruit.
Herkunft:
Asia Minor
Planting depth: same as depth in pot. Figs need a sunny and warm location. They are quite undemanding and need little fertilizer. Waterlogging should be avoided. In winter, the plant should be protected from frost, as figs are sensitive to frost. Depending on the conditions, the tree can be harvested up to 2-3 times per season. In our latitudes, however, it is usually harvested a maximum of twice.
