Description

Gonzales is a coarse-stemmed, vigorous, upright chive; dark green; good yield. Particularly well suited to outdoor cultivation. Resistant to rust.

Growing tips

The perennial chive is rather undemanding, but thrives particularly well in humus-rich garden soil with a good water supply. It can also be harvested in winter by planting strong root balls from the garden in pots in late fall and placing them on the windowsill. Tip: Flowers in pinkish-purple false umbels that look pretty in fresh and dry bouquets, but are also edible. Chive seeds only have a high germination capacity in the first year, so do not buy in advance. - Sowing time: Either pre-cultivation indoors or direct sowing outdoors from March to June. Opinions differ here: some prefer pre-cultivation indoors to avoid weed pressure in the bed, others prefer direct sowing outdoors because it could be too warm indoors. The truth lies somewhere in between. What is definitely true, however, is the fact that chives germinate very irregularly and hesitantly. - Germination period: Irregular, 14-28 days at temperatures between 15-18°C - Location: Sun to partial shade and fresh, rather moist, nutrient-rich, humus-rich soil. - Care: Chives like moist and nutrient-rich soil. Watering and occasional fertilizing are very good for it. Otherwise you just need to keep the weeds away. In winter, the plant retracts completely into the soil and sprouts again very early in spring. It can also be propagated very well vegetatively by division. - Harvest: The tubular fresh stalks can be cut fresh from spring to fall.
