Costates/Costata Romanesco forms long, green-speckled, striped fruits, which when young show clearly protruding light green-yellowish ribs. Decorative, star-shaped cross-section. Slightly sweet taste. Remain fresh for up to 12 weeks (do not store next to fruit or below 8 degrees). It has a medium-late fruit set. A bushy fancier variety. The flowers of this zucchini are also edible.
Non hybrid
Not frost resistant
Harden off before planting out. Likes warm, sheltered locations. Sensitive to frost. Several plants can pollinate each other. Harvest regularly (from 15 cm) so that new fruits are continuously formed. Fertilize and water regularly. Observe crop rotation. Home-grown zucchini seeds are strongly discouraged because they can produce the toxic bitter substance cucurbitacin. Mixed cultivation with borage promotes pollination. Pumpkins and zucchinis of the same species can cross-pollinate, making zucchinis bitter and inedible or poisonous (due to so-called curcurbitacins).
