The dog chamomile (Anthemis) is a genus within the composite family and comprises numerous species, including the dyer's chamomile (Cota tinctoria). These herbaceous plants are characterized by their branched growth, pinnate leaves and eye-catching flower heads surrounded by yellow tubular flowers. Dog chamomiles prefer sunny locations and well-drained, poor soil. They are easy to care for and flower from June to September. While the dyer's chamomile was once used for dyeing textiles, many species are slightly poisonous and can cause skin irritation. Care should therefore be taken, especially when handling the various species, to avoid confusion with the harmless true chamomile.
