Instructions

Description

Vines or grapes (Vitis vinifera) belong to the vine family (Vitaceae). They are climbing plants and can also be grown well in your own garden. In addition to the classic grapes, there are also table grapes, which are particularly suitable for direct consumption. The grapes can be found in the colors yellow-green, rust-red or blue-violet. The flowering period is between mid-May and mid-July. For their growth they need a warm, sunny location. In cooler locations, a sheltered position is recommended, as the grapes ripen late. In terms of soil, vines are undemanding and thrive in most soils.

Origin:

Mediterranean and Near East.

Growing tips

Mid-April is a good time to plant vines. The vine is planted in a 50 cm deep hole so that the grafting point is above the soil. Then press the soil down firmly and water well. Regular watering is important as the grapes need a lot of water. Avoid waterlogging at all costs, as vines do not tolerate this at all. Once a year, the vine should be given some compost. Regular spring and summer pruning is necessary as the grapes form on new shoots. Leaves that shade the grapes should also be removed, otherwise they will delay the ripening process. In winter, pile up the vine with a little soil or compost to protect it from frost and possibly cover it with fir branches or fleece (especially young vines). Need climbing support. Vines are self-pollinating. Can also be grown in pots or containers.
