Growing tips

Sow 3-4 seeds 5 mm deep in each place where a plant is to grow. Thin out to the strongest plant. Space the plants 45-60cm (18-24″) apart in rows 60-90cm (24-36″) apart. A humus-rich soil enriched with composted manure is best. Mix ½ cup of complete organic fertilizer into the soil under each seedling. From seedling to harvest, the cauliflower must grow steadily to form a large plant and stalk. If growth slows, scrape additional fertilizer into the surface of the soil around each plant. Keep the soil evenly moist by watering regularly. Shade the developing curd from the sun by tying leaves together or using newspaper. This is called "blanching" and ensures they stay white. Allow an extra 20-25 days for ripening if direct sowing. Once the curd has formed, check daily and cut when the florets are just starting to separate. This is when the flavor is at its best and the cauliflower is at its largest.
