Growing tips

Sow indoors, April-May, 0.5 cm deep, in a tray with compost. Water well and place in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Keep moist. The seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. When they are large enough, transplant into other trays 5 cm apart. Gradually acclimatize the seedlings to outdoor conditions before planting out in well-cultivated, fertile soil in July/August. Or outdoors: Sow thinly in April-May in a seedbed, 1.5 cm deep, directly into well-prepared, well-cultivated, fertile soil that has already been watered. Water well until the plants have grown. Transplant the plants 60 cm (2') apart when they are about 10 cm (4') high. Leave 60 cm (2') between rows. Plant firmly and water well. Harvest: March-April of the following year.
