Growing tips

Sow from March to May and plant out as soon as the plants are big enough. Brussels sprouts can be harvested in abundance from November to January. As with all cabbage varieties, it is important to maintain a crop rotation. This means that cabbage should only be grown on the same piece of land every 4 years. Crop rotation prevents the infestation of the tuber leaf fungus. Also watch out for cabbage white butterfly caterpillars, which can cause major damage to the leaves. Place the Brussels sprout plants in a sunny spot as they need plenty of light. Brussels sprouts are suitable for all types of soil and also thrive well in calcareous clay soil with a high pH value, but they should never be planted in freshly fertilized or humus-rich soil. Too many nutrients can lead to loose or open shoots. Make sure that the soil is kept slightly moist. Brussels sprouts should be firm and round and grow in rows along the stem of the plant.
